Pillow Insert Guide

Pillow Insert Guide

It’s no secret that we love well designed throw pillows and find them to be the perfect accessory to finish off a room or change-up the mood of your space by the season. It has taken us a lot of trial and error to figure out that not all pillow inserts are created equal!  Here, we’ve pulled together the perfect guide to help you navigate and determine the right insert fit for your pillow covers.

1. Size does matter

We always recommend to size up for our square pillow covers.  Purchase an insert that is 1-2” larger than the cover to get that full, oversized look you see designers showcase.
For lumbar pillows we recommend purchasing the same size insert as the cover.  The extra 1-2” increase isn’t necessary for rectangle shaped pillows and ends up making them too full and uncomfortable in use.

2. Don't forget the fill

Your comfort is just as important as the design you select.  We recommend using a 95% feather and 5% down insert. The feathers give your pillow weight while the down makes them comfy.

3. Last, but certainly not least

The first challenge is finding the perfect fit and fill for your pillow, but we’ve found that it’s just as hard to learn how to put the insert into the cover to avoid damaging your pillow.  Start by fully unzipping the cover. Next, fold your insert in half and while it is folded slide it into the cover through the center of the opening. When the insert is all the way inside the cover, unfold it and start to work the top corners of the insert into the top corners of the cover.  Once you have the top corners fitted in place you can work on the lower corners to make sure they match up.  Zip-up your cover and give it a good shake to evenly distribute the feathers.

So, you’re wondering what our favorites are?

ComfyDown Decorative Pillow Inserts are hands down our go-to and you can buy their high quality inserts on Amazon and have them shipped to you the next day.  Amazon Prime for the win!

Pottery Barn and West Elm also carry great down feather inserts, and frequently have sales where you can get a great deal.  They also carry some unique sizes that are a perfect fit for our lumbar pillows. Both brands offer only 100% feather fills so we’ve seen that the inserts are a bit softer and may need an extra fluff more often than those with 95% feather and 5% down.

Here is the Everand® buying guide for inserts we recommend with each of our pillows.

Happy stuffing!
